Encyclopedia Society is an informal alliance of professional encyclopedists around the world dedicated to the creation, editing and promotion of encyclopedias. The group also includes distinguished scholars in every field.

Encyclopedia Society was founded as The Encyclopedists, a name adapted from the group in 17th century France that produced La Encyclopedie, the first great Continental encyclopedia. The group included Diderot, D'Alembert, Voltaire and others. It was disbanded soon after the French Revolution.

Encyclopedia Society works with publishers as book packagers and producers. It manages a team of writers, researchers and illustrators to create new and innovative encyclopedias, both print and online, as a means of harnessing the information revolution. Over the past 20 years it has produced over 23 encyclopedias and 31 other reference books. Among the non-encyclopedia reference books that it produces are atlases, dictionaries, almanacs, annuals, chronologies, desk references and anthologies.
Encyclopedia Society also manages single-volume and multi-volume encyclopedias for publishers and converts print encyclopedias and reference books into online services.
Encyclopedia Society is headed by George Thomas Kurian, noted encyclopedist, who helped to found it. Born in India, he emigrated to the United States in 1968.
